On paper, Adrian Ivashkov lives a charmed life. The only child of Nathan and Daniella Ivashkov, he’s a spoiled and pampered royal and a member of elite Moroi society - one of a race of living, magic-wielding vampires. Anything he could ever have wanted has been given to him on a silver platter and he spends his days drinking, smoking and partying away. At least, he used to. Things have changed.

After barely making his way through high school, Adrian learns later that he’s not the only Moroi who never specialized in anything and that he has pretty elite company in Vasilisa Dragomir, the last princess in a long line of royals. He and Vasilisa don’t wield an element like most Moroi but use Spirit, a dangerous psychic power that keeps its users on the edge of madness. Delighted to know there’s another Spirit user out there, Adrian joins Vasilisa at school to learn more about his dubious gifts. While there, he falls for hot-headed Rose Hathaway in spite of his better judgment and pursues her even though she’s still in love with her undead boyfriend. Through their research of Spirit, Adrian and Vasilisa discover there is a way to bring back an undead vampire and Vasilisa manages to charm a silver stake with her power - and bring back Rose’s boyfriend.

Cue the inevitable heartbreak. But still, there are bigger things going on in the royal court and Adrian is thrust in the middle of them. Vasilisa is made queen but only because she has a half-sister to fulfill the archaic Moroi requirement of family quorum and the easiest way to take Vasilisa out of power is to kill Jill. Assassins even manage it once, except that one of the powers of Spirit is the ability to bring someone back from the dead and Adrian does, forming a psychic bond between he and Jill and igniting a fierce protective streak in the otherwise ne’er do well Adrian. It’s agreed Jill must go into hiding and so Adrian, along with dhampir Guardian Eddie Castile and Alchemist Sydney Sage go to the one place that vampire assassins will never go: sunny SoCal.

Forced proximity leads to feelings between he and Sydney, though the Alchemist vehemently denies it. Adrian embarks on a quest to better himself - enrolling in school, laying off the vices, picking his art back up. Everything seems to be going as well as can be expected but, with Adrian involved, the bottom’s likely to fall out soon.

Adrian enters the game during The Golden Lily.

    History:

    Wiki

    Personality:
If your eyes weren't open, you wouldn't know the difference between dreaming and waking.

Adrian walks a fine line between lucidity and madness. Much of his intense personality can be attributed to Spirit, a dangerous form of psychic magic that only a handful of vampires are capable of using. Because of Spirit, Adrian is able to do numerous amazing things - healing, dream-walking, see auras and, oh, wake the dead but it comes at a terrible price: his own sanity. Adrian tries to drown out the darkness that comes with Spirit with alcohol and drugs but he can never quite get rid of it and hates that the madness, such as it is, is what makes him so unique.

Adrian doesn’t do anything halfway. He feels the highest highs and lowest lows and his moods swing dizzyingly fast. He’s self-destructive and pushes himself far too much, afraid, as always, that he’s going to end up letting someone down because he simply can’t be trusted to be responsible. Most of his life, he’s been treated as a ne’er do well who won’t amount to anything and Adrian is more than happy to live up to that expectation for the most part. His father views him as a constant disappointment, something he tries to shrug off, and everyone else seems content to pat him on the head and excuse his behavior.

Except that Adrian doesn’t want to do that anymore. Adrian’s biggest critic is himself and his own self-scrutiny can be excruciating. He doesn’t want to try to do anything worthwhile because he’s afraid to fail at it and, as these things often go, he becomes his own self-fulfilling prophecy. There are those out there who inspire the best in him - Jill Dragomir, Sydney Sage, Rose Hathaway. Each of these women push him to be greater than the sum of his parts and to move beyond using his condition as a crutch and to use it to help people instead. And Adrian is trying - he just fucks it up a lot.

Adrian is charismatic, both as a function of the strong psychic magic of Spirit and his own charming personality; he’s able to read people well and able act accordingly to draw out even the shyest person in engaging and sincere conversation. He’s sarcastic and witty, quick with a quip even if he’s drunk more often than not and plays the quintessential party boy to the hilt. He has a deep appreciation and love for beauty in the world and creates his own through art, hoping to channel some of the madness of Spirit into something productive. He’s fiercely loyal to those who are able to get under his armor of designer clothes and witty barbs and will fight for what he believes in, even if fighting isn’t the most prudent path to take.

The most important thing to remember is that Adrian is locked in a constant battle - not with an external foe, like most Moroi and dhampirs, but with himself and he’s always just a knife’s edge away from losing everything to that madness.

I am choosing to bring Adrian from Silver Shadows after Sydney's kidnapping because it leaves him in a vulnerable place; Sydney is so often his emotional rock and without her, he's a mess. One of the most interesting things about Adrian is his tenuous grip on reality and strong emotions - such as love being denied - tend to bring out the worst in him; his magic power, Spirit, affects him much the way bipolar disorder would and it takes a lot for him to stay on an even keel. I think this exit point provides the most dynamic entrance for Adrian and brings him from a place where not everything in his life is resolved and Teleios can be used as a stepping stone to a new, improved Adrian.

Adrian himself can provide a lot to the gameplay at Teleios. He’s very charismatic, both because of his unique abilities as a Spirit user and as a function of his own personality and being in a situation where there’s little to do but socialize is a natural and comfortable one for him. He also would be served well by being in a place where people don’t know who he is. Being Adrian Ivashkov means either being hated and written off as useless (Exhibit A: Daddy) or being excused and dismissed by people who care about him (Exhibit B: Mommy). Teleios doesn’t provide that luxury and any reaction Adrian garners will be solely based upon how he acts. I think this will give him a chance to prove himself as something other than a vampire party boy and instill some confidence in him that he can be more than a barely functioning alcoholic. Ultimately, I would like to see him engaged with a job of some sort and maybe even teaching art to others, utilizing his unique gifts in a positive way instead of in his usual self-destruction.

    Powers/Abilities:

Adrian is a Moroi vampire who utilizes Sprit. As a Moroi, he is sun sensitive and does need to drink blood in addition to regular food. He is beautiful and slim, again, owing to his Moroi heritage. Drinking blood to the point of draining someone, be they human, Dhampir or Moroi, will turn him into a Strigoi, which is more like a traditional vampire. This is something all Moroi are vigilant to avoid as the Strigoi are their greatest enemies.

Spirit is a psychic-based power that allows Adrian to compel others, to visit another person's dreams, heal and, in rare cases, bring someone back from the dead. Spirit has a heavy toll on the bearer of the power and induces madness, which means most Spirit users are heavy drinkers and drug addicts (Adrian himself suffers from alcoholism). Adrian is also incredibly creative, owing to his gift of Spirit, and is quite an accomplished artist.

**Note** While Adrian will not have access to the magic aspects of Spirit upon his arrival, I would very much like for him to still have the negative effects of it. It's my thought process that being a Spirit user for so many years has permanently messed up his brain chemistry and he's bipolar now whether or not he uses any magic.

[Adrian is slumped over a half-empty tumbler of scotch with a cigarette dangling from his lips. His hair has moved past messy disarray into cross-the-street-this-guy-is-homeless and his nails are stained blue with paint. His eyes are red-rimmed and sad, his voice hoarse with emotion. Sydney is gone. He's not anywhere near Palm Springs, he can't reach her in dreams and now he's gone and gotten himself drunk so that Spirit doesn't make him want to slit his wrists. He's betraying her, isn't he? Simply by being here, he's betraying her and it's written on his face for everyone to see. When the bartender speaks, Adrian lifts a finger in response.]

Keep the scotch coming. I don't want to feel anything for the next month.

[The bartender huffs a little in response, cocks his head and Adrian knows he's probably in for a fight. Since he's been drinking so much, he can't access Spirit to compel and he's just going to have to be charming if he wants to keep drinking. He so, so wants to keep drinking. Being numb is preferable to being an emotional live wire in want of some industrial strength electrical tape. Scotch isn't exactly the best way to do that but it's all he has.]

Look, I have money. I'm going to pay. I walked here, so you don't have to worry about me driving. You are absolutely liability free on this one. Hell, I'm even a sad drunk. I'm probably not going to start a bar fight or anything if you keep serving me and I'm definitely not going to die. Now, c'mon. What does a guy have to do to get some service around here? I apprais...appresh...I'm grateful you care but...care a little less?

[In spite of the slurring, the bartender throws his hands up and leaves the bottle. It isn't the most artful compulsion he's ever done and Adrian's certain it was only natural charm and not Spirit but it got the job done. He wraps his hand around the bottle and tips a little more into his glass, sloshing it over the sides.]

    Here's to electrical tape.

[The guy sitting beside him gives him a strange look and Adrian shrugs, flashing a brilliant smile. He's careful to keep his fangs hidden, though, because while he's drunk he's not stupid. Moroi outing themselves in public is just asking for the Alchemists to come down on them like a warhammer.]

It's a metaphor. I'm going to spare you the details, it's a little convoluted, but let's just say that single-malt scotch is the best electrical tape on the market. It's industrial strength and im...you know, I'm not going to finish that. I'm just going to finish this.

[Both the bartender and his fellow drinkers roll their eyes as Adrian tips back his scotch but he's drunk enough that he simply doesn't care. It doesn't matter. He'll never see these people again.]

The deal for protection mandated that he and Sydney stay at Court and while Adrian was willing to do anything to keep her out of the clutches of the Alchemists, he didn't think they knew about the Nexus. Nobody knew about the Nexus except he and Sydney, it seemed, so it seemed like a safe enough place to hide out for the duration.

Oh, sure, they'd show up at Court just often enough to prove they were there; Adrian didn't put it past the Alchemists to call Lissa a liar and tell her to present them on command. He wasn't going to jeopardize that, not when he knew how much Lissa gave up in order to grant them both Sanctuary.

But he did want to enjoy his marriage and he didn't think he'd be able to do that while having his mother and everyone else breathing down their necks at Court. So the Nexus it was because once he got tired of being in bed for days on end, he wanted the freedom to go anywhere he wanted and he just couldn't get that anywhere else.

Sydney was still asleep so he poked gently at her shoulder. "Mrs. Ivashkov? Wake up. I think we need to change accommodations and go to the special place."

Adrian's suite was, for lack of a better word, a mess. He hadn't slept in going on four days and the entire thing reeked of an unholy combination of paint fumes, cigarette smoke and cheap whiskey. He had been back and forth to his own apartment a few times for supply runs (mostly booze and cigs but he'd snagged his art supplies on one of the trips) but he hadn't grabbed any essentials.

No clean clothes. No food. No shower.

When he had run out of canvas to paint, he'd started on the walls and ceiling and right now, he was in the midst of painting a psychedelic lily on the back wall of his suite, right behind his bed. It was gold and silver and bright yellow and purple, all of the colors that he associated with Sydney and it was absolutely...

...it was shit, wasn't it? But he was going to keep painting it until it was done because he wanted her to like it. There was nothing he wanted more than for Sydney to see this tribute he'd painted for her and swoon over him and love him because back home she had rebuffed him and told him she couldn't be with a Moroi, no way and no how, and even if the Sydney here was different, Adrian didn't trust it. He could only trust himself and his own ability to make her love him and this...this might do it.

    This had to do it.

    “So, where are you, Sage?”

Adrian had lost track of how many days he had been in the hotel, enjoying his newfound freedom to binge on every vice known to man or Moroi. A nagging voice in the back of his head that sounded an awful lot like a hot blonde Alchemist reminded him that he had responsibilities in Palm Springs that shouldn’t be taken lightly but Adrian wasn’t listening to it, not now. He had just been turned down by said blonde Alchemist and needed to feel numb for a little while so the dark didn’t creep in. As hazy as he was right now at least two days into a binge, Spirit was barely there. Oh, sure, it lingered around the edges and little fingers of power seeped in every once in a while but for the most part the only thing he could manage was alcohol-laced thoughts about how everyone was probably better off without him.

When did he get so depressing? Just a year or so ago, he’d still been the life of every party and now he was laying in a hotel God knows where feeling sorry for himself. Thoughts of what Sydney or Jill might think started to crowd in and harsh his buzz and that’s when Adrian decided he’d had enough of moping for the moment. He’d just get dressed and head back to Palm Springs, maybe work on the next in a series of abstract paintings that were more or less about Sydney. There’d been a triumphant red lily and a haunting golden eye. He thought his next might be a moody abstract in shades of khaki and earth-brown and if that wasn’t a sign of madness, he didn’t know what was; only he could be in love with a woman who found color to be obnoxious.

Adrian? He was all color. He was muddy brown and bright green, deep purple and violent, vibrant blue. He was everything all swirled together, chaotic and resistant to any semblance of order. He was every stereotype of an artist and then some, right down to the cling of stale smoke and expensive gin lingering on his breath.

You’re ridiculous, Ivashkov, he thought to himself, pulling on clothes that were impossibly wrinkled from spending days crumpled on the floor. He tousled his hair lightly and gave his reflection and irrepressible smile, trying to look every inch the charming playboy that he desperately pretended to be. Very few people saw past that but those who did? Well. They were the ones who mattered.

He tugged at the closet door that he’d come through originally and pulled it open, surprised to see it was just an ordinary closet. A big closet, to be sure, but there was no secret world lurking beyond this wardrobe. Adrian walked inside and pressed his hands against the wall, hoping to find some catch or some way back to his own world. His hands got more desperate, beating the wall instead of tapping it, and he finally kicked the damn thing in frustration.

“What the fuck? I just came through here...it was just a few days ago! I just came through here.”

He kicked it one last time for good measure and stormed out. On the way, he grabbed his rapidly-dwindling pack of cigarettes and stuck one in his mouth, lit it and took a drag, needing the nicotine before he had to go face people. It was daylight, which meant humans would be out and about and he needed himself as numb as possible if he was going to try to find a way back home. Dulling Spirit meant actually being able to conduct a conversation without checking auras and that was something he desperately needed to be able to do.

He found the first person walking the halls and reached out, touching the inside of their elbow. He put on his best, cocksure grin and tilted his head.

“So, which one of these doors leads to Palm Springs? If I don’t get back, some crazy girl is going to organize my closet by color and I’m never going to survive that much organization. Help me? I’m desperate.”

It was a little over the top, sure, but Adrian thought it couldn’t hurt. He was, after all, actually telling the truth.
