The only child of Nathan and Daniella Ivashkov, he’s a spoiled and pampered royal and a member of elite Moroi society - one of a race of living, magic-wielding vampires. Anything he could ever have wanted has been given to him on a silver platter and he spends his days drinking, smoking and partying away. At least, he used to. Things have changed. After barely making his way through high school, Adrian learns later that he’s not the only Moroi who never specialized in anything and that he has pretty elite company in Vasilisa Dragomir, the last princess in a long line of royals. He and Vasilisa don’t wield an element like most Moroi but use Spirit, a dangerous psychic power that keeps its users on the edge of madness. Delighted to know there’s another Spirit user out there, Adrian joins Vasilisa at school to learn more about his dubious gifts. While there, he falls for hot-headed Rose Hathaway in spite of his better judgment and pursues her even though she’s still in love with her undead boyfriend. Through their research of Spirit, Adrian and Vasilisa discover there is a way to bring back an undead vampire and Vasilisa manages to charm a silver stake with her power - and bring back Rose’s boyfriend. Cue the inevitable heartbreak. But still, there are bigger things going on in the royal court and Adrian is thrust in the middle of them. Vasilisa is made queen but only because she has a half-sister to fulfill the archaic Moroi requirement of family quorum and the easiest way to take Vasilisa out of power is to kill Jill. Assassins even manage it once, except that one of the powers of Spirit is the ability to bring someone back from the dead and Adrian does, forming a psychic bond between he and Jill and igniting a fierce protective streak in the otherwise ne’er do well Adrian. It’s agreed Jill must go into hiding and so Adrian, along with dhampir Guardian Eddie Castile and Alchemist Sydney Sage go to the one place that vampire assassins will never go: sunny SoCal. Forced proximity leads to feelings between he and Sydney, though the Alchemist vehemently denies it. Adrian embarks on a quest to better himself - enrolling in school, laying off the vices, picking his art back up. Everything seems to be going as well as can be expected but, with Adrian involved, the bottom’s likely to fall out soon. Adrian enters the game during The Golden Lily.
